  5. Oh yes! There are some really promising seminars. I’ve bought several early-bird discounted tickets for the seminars I thought had potential...

  7. I worked as a volunteer at the MWF. It was a great experience; I saw heaps of writers I'd heard of and many more I hadn't. One woman named MJ Hyland had around 400 people pay $20 to listen to her talk for an hour. Fortunate for them she was as good at speaking as she (I assume) is at writing. I never imagined so many people would want to hear an author speak; it was truly inspiring. It proved that books really do make a difference to people's lives.

The best talks I saw were by Li Cunxin (his book 'Mao's Last Dancer' has been made into a film), Tony Birch (He teaches here at UniMelb) who spoke about the importance of visiting the place you are writing about, as well as China Mieville, Nikki Gemmell and Hitomi Kanehara (She had two translators - who knew being a famous author had so many perks? I had a look at her books; they were around 120 pages and written in large text, really they were novellas. Still, they were enough to crack the world literary scene; this is also inspiring. Anyone read any of these authors' works?

  8. Hey Jessesomer, I'd recommend Hitomi Kanehara's 'Autofiction', it's a small book - like a novella. She writes excellent characters and explores the psyche really effectively. She had two translators at MWF? Were they translating into another language, or just from Japanese to English? Sounds like MWF was awesome...I'm thinking about volunteering next year.
